Decluttering and Mindfulness: Incorporating Feng Shui in Our Everyday Lives

Feng shui is a term that is often thrown around in lofty discussion, and with it often comes a connotation of wealth and intangibility. But what if people could simplify the term, learn why it matters in the first place, and ‘feng shui on a budget’? Well, this how to guide is a short jump start into using the ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui to declutter our lives and enhance wellness practices on a budget.

What is Feng Shui anyway? It is an ancient Chinese practice which focuses on harmonizing individuals with their surrounding environment. It is based on the belief that the arrangement and orientation of physical spaces can affect the flow of energy which can impact a person’s health and well-being. Conversely clutter is known as confusion or crowding and in the context of a person’s physical space (home, office, etc.) to declutter is to remove such mess or clutter often times by organizing.

A key concept of feng shui is a clutter free environment. A central and simple way to declutter using feng shui is to be mindful of furniture placement, color use, and natural elements. You may consider arranging furniture to allow for easy movement.

A budget friendly way to do this is to purchase furniture that can be relocated and rearranged with ease. For example, consider purchasing couches with moveable ottomans, storage cubes, and light weight bed frames that have wheels.

Without delving deeply into color psychology, using colors that reflect the desired energy of each room in your space may be helpful in the decluttering process. For example, a green wall in a family room can be incorporated for growth if one wishes to expand their family or desires expansion for those in a person’s family. For a budget friendly incorporation of Feng Shui, a single wall can be painted with a sample size of paint from the local home improvement store.

Bringing nature into the home can also be helpful in the decluttering and feng shui processes.

Bringing plants, water, and natural light into a room can produce harmony. Adding inexpensive, small water fountains into a room can invite nature into a space. Small water fountains can be purchased at local stores on or online marketplaces.

While this is not an exhaustive list of decluttering tips or an all-encompassing exploration of Feng Shui it is a great tool to help us all get organized and declutter for the sake of our wellbeing while on a budget.
