Tips for Moms on Social Media

Being a mom on social media is both a joy and a job.  Between keeping up with our children’s accounts, staying aware of the latest trends on each platform, and managing our own newsfeeds, motherhood on social media can be quite busy but it does not have to be a bad experience.  Here are a few tips for how to enjoy being a mom on social media:

✔️Check your children’s accounts without stressing yourself out.  Subscribing to your children’s posts to receive a notification when they share new content is one means of staying up to date with your children’s social media activity.  Commenting, liking, and sharing your children’s posts varies between parents and children groups, but there are shortcuts that can ease the headache of remembering a username or searching through timeline updates, such as a subscription to your child’s posts.  If you have underage children, you can also add their profile to the mobile social media application on your electronic device so that you can monitor their use as opposed to requesting the password or their device from them when there is a need for monitoring.

✔️Curate your feed based on things you enjoy.  I enjoy fashion, inspiration, interior design, and health and wellness information on social media, thus those are the pages I subscribe to and follow.  A method that I use to add more of the content that inspires me and makes me feel good is to search and follow the hashtags used in posts shared by some of my favorite accounts.  I also refrain from following and sometimes unfollow accounts that promote negativity overtly or indirectly in an effort to protect my energy and schema.

✔️Post for you and yours!  Although social media is often said to be for the youth or young users, on social media you are only as old as you feel.  You can follow accounts of people in your age group to create a community of your peers (you are not the only parent on social media).  You can encourage your friends to join and share hashtags and trending topics that matter to you.  Finally, you can post your favorite photos of yourself and things you enjoy; do not be ashamed to ask your children to help you with capturing the perfect selfie or #OOTD (outfit of the day) picture, they will likely enjoy the reversal of roles where the child has an opportunity to teach the parent.

With the ever-changing digital space and world of social media, the roles and capabilities of users may change but no matter what there will always be moms on social media, so why not enjoy the experience!

In the future, Positively Posh by Cheryl will share more tips for navigating beauty, lifestyle, health, and wellness through social media and technology.  I am lucky to have a son who has a background in tech and our conversations enrich my knowledge and use of technology which I would love to continue sharing with you.
