The Inner Critic You Call “High Standards”: A Nurse's Honest Take on Self-Talk

Thirty years in healthcare taught me the difference between excellence and self-punishment.

For years, I called my inner critic “having high standards.” It told me my work was never quite enough. It rehearsed my mistakes long after everyone else had forgotten them. I thought that voice made me good at my job. I was wrong. It just made me exhausted.

Excellence and self-punishment can look identical from the outside. They feel completely different on the inside.

The Voice You Mistake for Motivation

High achievers often credit a harsh inner voice for their success. The truth is more complicated. That voice may have pushed you forward at times, but it has also cost you sleep, joy, and confidence you earned and never let yourself keep.

Real motivation moves you toward something. Self-punishment helps you feel less like a failure. They are not the same engine, even when they produce similar results.

What Decades in Healthcare Taught Me

I have watched brilliant nurses tear themselves apart over a single mistake in a twelve-hour shift full of correct decisions. The harshest critics in any room are often the most competent people. They are often the most competent people who never learned to separate accountability from cruelty.

Accountability says, "I will do better next time." Self-punishment says, "I am not enough," and it never lets the conversation end.

Three Signs Your Inner Critic Has Taken Over

  • You remember every mistake in detail and forget every win within a day.

  • You explain your achievements as luck and your failures as proof.

  • You feel guilty resting, even after a genuinely hard day.

What to Do Instead

You do not need to silence the voice completely. You need to demote it. Let it speak, then ask it a direct question: would you say this to someone you love? If the answer is no, the standard is not high. It is unkind.

If you are a nurse, a leader, or a high achiever ready to separate accountability from self-punishment, I have a 1:1 consulting offer built for exactly that. Book a discovery call. Link in bio.
